FOOD EVENT RECAP: Pike Place Market Sunset Supper

Last Friday was Pike Place Market's annual Sunset Supper. Luckily the heavy rain let up just in time for the event and it was a huge success! Some of the area's best chefs, restaurants, wineries, breweries and distilleries sampled their delicious food and drinks. This is my favorite food event of the year. To be able to take in the market setting in the evening with great food and drinks is truly an awesome experience!

Proceeds from the Sunset Supper benefit The Market Foundation's mission to end hunger, care for the sick, educate kids, and find homes for those without, right at Pike Place Market. The Market Foundation is the heart of the Market. Their programs allow the diverse community to live and thrive at Pike Place Market. Learn more about The Market Foundation here.

If you didn't have a chance to attend this year, I highly recommend making the Sunset Supper a must-attend event for next year! Also, check out the Pike Up! website to learn all about the Market's expansion!

FOOD REVIEW: Urbane at Olive 8

http://urbaneseattle.com/index.php

More and more local restaurants are offering fresh, local, organic food. Urbane at Olive 8 in downtown Seattle is doing it right. Urbane is committed to sustainability and featuring local ingredients. They source a majority of their raw ingredients from within a 200-mile radius of their restaurant, reducing their carbon footprint.

Summertime BLT with organic mixed greens salad.

I had the opportunity to enjoy a nice lunch at Urbane this week. Their menu offers a great mix of small plates, sandwiches and large plates. I ordered the Summertime BLT with a side salad. The sandwich comes well stacked with all fresh ingredients of bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado on whole wheat bread. The BLT was delicious! The bacon was crispy and it had just enough avocado to give the sandwich some good flavor. I really enjoyed the side salad also, fresh organic mixed greens, radish, Willamette Valley aged gouda and verjusnette.

Sign of a good meal.

As you can see, I really enjoyed the sandwich and salad.

Apples and caramel dipping sauce.
For dessert, I went with the very simple, but very tasty fresh apple slices with caramel dipping sauce.

Oh, so good.

Urbane dining area.
The restaurant itself is nice, clean and minimal. Urbane is one of very few restaurants in Seattle with LEED Silver Certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council to provide a standard for environmentally sustainable construction and operating practices. This certification adds to Urbane's commitment of sustainability, not only with their farm-to-table food, but with their day-to-day operations. I'm impressed with their efforts, and I can only hope more Seattle area restaurants take on the same commitment.

Urbane is one of over 90 restaurants, wineries, breweries and distilleries that will be participating in the Sunset Supper at Pike Place Market on August 14th. This is one of the best parties of the summer! Proceeds from the Sunset Supper benefit The Market Foundation. Their mission is to end hunger, care for the sick, educate kids, and find homes for those without, right at Pike Place Market. FOOD EVENT RECAP: Sunset Supper at Pike Place Market

Friday night The Pike Place Market Foundation hosted the Sunset Supper at Pike Place Market. It is one of the largest events of the year to raise money for the Market Foundation. The Sunset Supper featured some of the best Chefs, restaurants, wineries, distilleries and breweries the Seattle area has to offer! It doesn't get any better in Seattle than savoring great food and drinks throughout a warm, summer evening at one of the city's most popular landmarks!

Even before the event started, there was already a long line of people waiting to enter the Market so they could start enjoying the great food and drinks that awaited them.

The Sunset Supper featured a lot of great Chefs including Seattle's own Thierry Rautureau, The Chef in the Hat! Thierry is well-known for his two popular restaurants, Luc and Loulay. Thierry has appeared on Bravo's "Top Chef Masters", and is also the co-host of "Seattle Kitchen" on KIRO Radio. Thierry is one of my favorite Chefs. He always takes delight in preparing delicious food he knows people will enjoy.

Throughout the evening, I had the pleasure of sampling a lot of great food, wines and liquor. Below is a slide show of some of the amazing food and drinks offered by the vendors at the Sunset Supper.

...

From the start of the event, the Market was full of energy with attendees sampling the delicious offerings from all the vendors.

Not only was everyone treated to great food and drinks, but the live entertainment was great too! The band played through the evening entertaining the crowd as they danced through the night.

The Sunset Supper at Pike Place Market would not be complete without a beautiful sunset! Earlier in the day, it almost looked as if the weather would not cooperate, but it turned out to be a beautiful evening.

Future expansion plans for Pike Place Market
Proceeds from the Sunset Support go to The Pike Place Market Foundation, which is the heart of the Market. The Foundation helps the Market we all love remain a thriving, caring community. The Foundation was established in 1982. It is a non-profit organization which supports housing and services for low-income neighbors.  They provide a food bank to feed the hungry; a preschool available to low-income families; a medical clinic offering care for homeless, low-income, and elderly clients; and Heritage House that offers assisted living to seniors.

The Market is planning to expand Westward! The viaduct will be coming down soon, and the Market will be expanding West to offer space for more vendors and access to the waterfront. This is a very ambitious project, but the benefits to the Market, downtown and the waterfront will be huge. The Waterfront Entrance to Pike Place Market will expand upon the heart of what The Market Foundation does in the community. You can help the Market realize its dream by making a donation today!

Even Rachel the Piggy Bank was all dressed up for the Sunset Supper!

The Sunset Supper at Pike Place Market was truly a great evening of food, drinks and entertainment. The event allowed some of the best Chefs, restaurants, wineries, distilleries and breweries to highlight what they have to offer. It was also a great event to raise awareness of The Market Foundation and what it does to keep the Market a thriving and caring community. This was by far the best food event I have attended this year, and I look forward to attending next year! Be sure to check out The Market Foundation's website to get the latest news on their future events, and to learn more about what the Market has to offer.

FOOD REVIEW: Manhattan

Over the weekend I paid a visit to Manhattan on Capitol Hill for dinner with some friends. Manhattan is located on 12th Avenue between Madison and Pike. As the name implies, the food is inspired by the east coast.

Manhattan has a craft cocktail bar that serves classic drinks as well as their own signature cocktails. I ordered a Salted Caramel Apple cocktail that was very tasty! It's vodka, apple liqueur, lime juice with a sweet and salty caramel rim. This cocktail was like drinking dessert! I loved the caramel around the rim of the glass, and it was the perfect combo to the taste of the apple and lime. The cherry in the glass was perfect contrast to the beautiful color of the cocktail. I also tried the Manhattan(2). It is a twist on the classic with rye, punt e mes (Italian Vermouth), peychaud's (bitters), orange bitter and served with an orange twist. Strong, but tasty!

Manhattan offers a good selection of food on their menu, from seared scallops, to fried chicken, to filet mignon. I went with the Grilled Duck Breast. This was served with grits, brown butter and sage, seasonal vegetables (carrots, asparagus, squash), and red wine sauce. The duck breast was beautifully served pre-sliced on an island of grits surrounded by red wine sauce. The duck was cooked perfectly. The skin was nice and crispy and beautifully scored. It was tender and juicy, and the perfect bite included the duck with some grits dipped in the red wine sauce! There was even some thought placed in the presentation of the seasonal vegetables. Cut to nice bite-sized portions and perfectly prepared.

As you can see from my empty plate, I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner!

I really like the interior of Manhattan. We were seated in one of the booths located along the wall opposite the bar. There are tables through the middle of the restaurant, as well as tables with bench and chair seating near the front of the restaurant. The big orange wall behind the bar glows in the back light, as the rest of the restaurant is lit with different alternating vintage looking chandeliers. The decor is definitely chic, but comfy. On my next visit, I would love to just sit at the bar and try some of their other signature cocktails and some more of their delicious food.

Manhattan has two tufted walls with the others covered in patterned and textured wallpaper. The entrance to the restrooms is draped off with dramatic, heavy curtains.

Manhattan is also taking part in the Sunset Supper at Pike Place Market on August 15th. Check out my previous post about the Supper, or go to The Pike Place Market Foundation website for more info.
